Quarter page advert display

I have chosen a 1/4 page display because i want the advert to be realistic as this is a new band who can not afford full page or half page advertising space in magazines.

Record label image

I created The Record Label Image called "Dave's Shed Records LTD. The reason why i wanted to create my own record label image is because i wanted to insert a records label logo onto my digipak but to keep to the theme of the band being up and coming with not a lot of money and being very individual i decided to make my own record label.
I created the image by using auto shapes in photoshop and then dropping text on top of it

Final Font

The final font i have chosen is the "Orator Std" font and the reasons i have chosen this font is because i believe the font has a simple and basic design which will fit perfectly with the rest of my products. I have placed all my fonts onto different media products and through this experiment i believe i have the right font

FeedBack From Questionnaire

The Feedback i have found is that a mainly alternative music listeners audience ages between 18-18 prefer to socialize with friends. Meaning my products should relate to this information by showing the band as a group but also the people i asked were mainly concert/ festival goers who spend there money on typical indie/alternative items such as clothing instruments and alcohol. This means the way in construct the image of the band has to fit in with a typical indie image so the audience can relate to the band and recognize them.

Risk Assessment

Possible Risks For Magazine Advertisement:
Slip On Wet Ground
Fire: - Burning a person, or ground, smoke may damage lungs, strings of guitar may explode

How To Combat These Problems
Lay down slip proof mats, wear sensible shoes.
Have a hose pipe near, plenty of towels to help prevent a fire.

Possible Risks For Digipak:
Electrocuting From Studio Lighting
Sharp knifes may stab a person
Alcohol may slow down reaction times if driving

How To Combat These Problems
Make sure all wiring is safe and then do not use lights with wet hands
Show everyone how to carry a knife and to make everyone aware of the knife
If anyone has drank alcohol from the set make sure they are not driving home

Possible Risks For Video:
Slipping on wet surface
Falling Over Rocks
Falling off cliff face or down a hole/ un-used mine

How To Combat These Problems
Everyone wears sensible shoes
Make Everyone Aware of Rocks
Before shooting find an area with no dangers of holes or cliff faces

Research On Magazine Adverts

This is a photograph i have taken of an old NME magazine. This is an example of an advertisement page which has a number of three adverts on. The two which are a quarter page size are either a new band or an existing product which has not got the money to spend on large advertising. I have decided to make my own advert as a quarter page this is because the band would not be able to spend a large amount of money on advertisement. A small advert can also be seen as arty/ minimalist making this advert suitable for the running theme of my media products for we are cossak.
The half page advert is an NME radio advert this will be larger than the smaller less known musicians because NME radio is well known and that the magazine will want to promote it's own brand.

This would be an example of a product which wants to receive a lot of attention from potential customers but also the company e.g HMV have a lot of money they can invest in large advisement schemes.

Manipulating An Image

This was the original image without any manipulation in photoshop

I Have Now Blown Up The Image so it looks larger on my screen and i have used the Lasso Tool to go round the image and then selected the burn tool which makes the image look more realistic by adding colour to the image this is a good tool if i have an over exposed image i can use the burn tool to make
the image look more realistic and less over exposed.

By using the Lasso Tool i can now withdraw this image from the original photograph and insert it onto a new page this will help me as if i want to add an image of a band member onto my page i can by using the lasso tool

Minimalism and how to create a minimalist look

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. Minimalism can be seen as a movement or fight against mainstream /Abstract Expressionist art. Minimalism is often art expressed threw moving or still images, sculptures, buildings, food. The essentials of a minimalist piece of work is to break and cut down any "unneeded" items to the product. A minimalist product will be very basic and simple for example modern art can be seen as minimalist as there is just the bare fundamentals of the paint on the paper completely contrasting the paintings of large elaborate woods or sea scenes. An example of a minimalist architecture would be that of the tate modern gallery in London as many of the work shown is minimalist but the walls and floors are often white with no distractions away from the art on show. Minimalism in music videos can be shown by the locations. The location would need to be bare and not a distraction for the viewer again this would be similar for the media products i will be creating the products will be stripped down of any text apart from essentials and also the images will have a simple but effect view and may connote messages to the audience simply.

Creativity

Creativity can be seen as something that you are born with or you develop over a period of time. This week i have chosen to develop something creative and to see if i was born with the "creativity gene" This week i produced images with out using people/ band members. I have incorporated these images with a mock up digipak cover. This piece of work has answered any questions i had about either using objects instead of people for my digipak.

Technology Week

During the technology week i set myself a number of targets so I can be prepared and have a greater understanding of the technology i will use to create my media products.

I have spent over 4 hours on photoshop CS5. I needed to spend a long time period on photoshop CS5 as i have never used this program before i was only familiar with the CS3 version. After this week i can now produce a successful digipak and magazine article and i have made a mock up of a digipak.

I have experimented with the shutter speeds and appature with my SLR camera. I have experimented with these camera aspects because I want to change the depth of focus that is normally achieved by just using the auto setting on a camera.

I have tried to achieve a stock motion video by streaming many images together showing movement. I have practised this as I want to use this in my music video and practice would give me a deeper understanding how this would work.

What is the relationship between technical skills and creativity?
Technical skills can be used to create a creative piece of work for example by changing the shutter speed or lense to a fish eye lense you can create a completely different image making it look creative and individual.

Digipak Template

I have chosen this digipak template as it consists of six panels this means i can use the extra two panels for more photography work showing different images of the band fitting in with the genre. This digipak template will also give me the opportunity to add any legal legislation to one of the panels that i did not want to add to the front or back cover.

Digipak Research

Through My digipak research i have developed an understand that my digipak needs to promote the band in the genre so that the digipak can relate and inform with the customers. I have decided to include band members on my digipak cover as i believe this would help create an image which would be remembered as an image of the band. The band need to be on the front of the digipak as people will recognise the band members due to the exposure of the band with their rise to success. I have also chose to take a minimalist output towards my album cover and digipak by creating a six panel digipak with photographs dominating the panels instead of text. I have chose to not include a lot of text as i want the band to show that the music will sell the album instead of the text. This tells the target audience to listen to the music and relate to the songs.

I have asked my self a number of questions so that i can create a successful digipak.

1)How will the audience know what genre my digipak is?
The audience will understand that the genre of my digipak is indie/alternative as my band member characters will all be dressed in indie attire. The colour theme i will use mellow/simple colours which will help give that minimalistic look again contributing to the indie look. The album cover will have a sense of entropy as it will be different and individual which suits the indie theme.

2)How will the digipak cover promote the band by giving the band more advertising by including pictures of them. Also the digipak cover will promote the band as it will be eye catching and individual this will "shake" the music world as it will be completely individual digipak that challenges mainstream ideology.

3) Will i be able to sustain a theme which can run threw all my media products? e.g digipak, music video, advertising poster. The way i will be able to sustain a theme threw out these products is by having the band members on each product dressed typically indie with the production work having an independent feel and a simplistic/minimalist look

The Pitch Feedback

After delivering my Pitch to the rest of the class and my teacher I was given comments back from what the class thought of my presentation.
The pitch overall was a success but I had a recurring comment that there was worries about transport and how to transport my equipment and band members to the ambitious locations i may have chosen. After these comments i contacted my characters in the band and we have discussed to use our cars to move the band members and instruments/props.
Another comment i picked up on was how successful the idea was to include "moving art" in my video and the class really picked up on this and thought it would be a great idea which could make a successful video.
Speaking to my teacher we discussed how planning would be essential and how the Pitch had no real plan to it. there was another comment that my ideas may be to ambitious. After these comments i started to plan by story boarding and to research more into different videos included in my genre.
Another recurring comment was would there be a running theme which could be recognized by the viewers. Some members in the class asked if the music video may turn out to be too "bitty and messy" meaning that there would just be a number of scenes put together. After these comments i went away and found a way through storyboarding to link all the scenes together and to dispose of the ideas which would not be able to fit into the themed video.
I had positive comments like the genre was easily identified and i had kept a control on who i wanted in the video and how they would look.

The Pitch has helped me to make certain decisions especially with planning i have been able to ask people to give me their opinions on things i was uncertain of and this has helped me in being able to storyboard but also in how to organize my video and media products

Theorists and theories

Andrew Goodwin
Goodwin's theory breaks down videos into two aspects either illustrative or amplifying.
Illustrative is a video which the lyrics match the scenes in the video for example a love song would show scenes of lovers and romance or a dance song would show dancing in a night club.
An amplifying video is a video which isn't as simple as an illustrative video. An amplifing video may have more than one meaning to it this means aspects of the video can include entropic aspects which would not look out of place with the video.

Todorov believes that their are 5 different aspects to a narrative video:
Equilibrium which is part of the story where emtoions are equal and there is no heavy storyline. For example a couple holding hands walking.
Disequilibrium is when emotions are not balanced and the characters become unsettled or argue. For example the female in the couple finds out the male has been having an affair.
Recognition is where the emotions change again but they improve from Disequilibrium. An example of this would be that the female forgives the male for cheating on her.
Reparation is when the troubles that have bothered the characters start to dissolve and things are worked out between the characters. For Example the women starts to trust and love the man again.
New Equilibrium is the same as Equilibrium where the characters are happy and no heavy storyline to upset either character. For example the women has completely forgiven the man and now they are having a family.

Claud Levi Strauss believes a video should have a good vs evil storyline where two or more characters fight the same battle to either overcome evil or for the "baddy" to suppress evil. This could be expressed threw a metaphor or a different storyline or as a simple battle between two characters. an example would be a soldier going off to war or superheroes battling each other like superman vs a robber or terrorist.

Vladimir Propp believed in his fairy-tales containing eight characters:
The Villain
The Hero
The Princess
The devious fake hero
The Helper
The Princess's Father
The Donor
The Dispatcher
