My Genre Research

The Strokes - Heart In A Cage

This video helps represent its target audience and Comfortably recognized by genre by the rebelliouslooks of the band, The band is playing on top ofbuildings, lying in the middle of the streets with long hair and old clothes this connotes a mystery and danger about the band who are not afraid to be individual andare confident in the way the world looks at them Michael Shore's theory that a males fantasies make up all music videos can not 100% possibly be adopted for this video as the video shows no sex cars or violence it just shows the city and the band. But it can be arguedthat the bands fantasies are with the city of New York. The way this video has been filmed has made a major inpact on how the viewers will view the video. The video has establishing shots showing the band members along side these huge buildings using a low angle to create a sense of power and importance for the band members next to these landmarks. The landmarks create mystery and can attract the viewers to this video. There are many close ups of the lead singer on the floor filmed using a high angle making the singer look weak and vulnerable. The fats paced editing (montage editing)throwing back and forth from one shot to another of different band members links in with the fast paced music again linking in with thegenre. This helps the video seem lively, entertaining and energetic. This video has both levels of entropy and redundancy. The Entropy envolved is that of a muscian on top of buildings playing their instruments and a band member being walked on but other bands have done similar things. The high level of redundancy is that everything can be recgonized and understood by everyone

The Heart in a cage video is a black and white video of the band the strokes set in the streets of New York City. The video being black and white helps create a mystery linking in with the bands love for New York City. The shots of New York make the city look dark, dirty, mysterious all linking in with the genre of indie. The video contains the lead singer lying on the floor in a busy street of new York desperately trying to avoid being trod on while lip syncing to the music. The rest of the band are playing their instruments on or near famous landmarks in NYC. The band are all typically indie looking as they are all dressed in old beaten up leather, black trousers or suits this is linked with the genre as many of the target audience would look the same. The gritty dirty looking video can be linked with the music scene of indie as there are a lot of unsigned bands doing the pub and club crawl trying to make it large.

Andrew Goodwin’s theory that the lyrics should be linked with the video is not adopted for this video but the way the instruments are being played i believe can be linked with this video as we hear gritty guitar solos and a mumbling lead singer with shots of a mysterious New York all set in black and white this can resemble the way the genre is represented.

This video helps represent its target audience and comfortably recognized by genre by the rebellious looks of the band, The band is playing on top of buildings, lying in the middle of the streets with long hair and old clothes this connotes a mystery and danger about the band who are not afraid to be individual and are confident in the way the world looks at them.
