My Genre Research

Peter Doherty - For Lovers

Andrew Goodwins theory would be perfectly suited for this video and artist as Goodwin suggests a framework that "A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illlustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music. but also to be genre related."
This video will represent the target audience and the members of a genre like this as rebellious as there is scenes of smoking. Connoting people in this genre as independent, creative with their own identity. This genre of music is all to do with battling the average mainstream pop act by being individual with lyrics, looks, videos and a completely different way of life.

The For Lovers video is set in Paris, France creating a setting of romanticism tying in with French new wave cinema. The video represents romance not just human emotion but romanticism linking in with the setting. The lighting of each scene having a dark and old looking video effect helping represents an old cinema feel fitting in with the surroundings of Paris.
Thevideo can be linked with the genre indie/ alternative as the video is on a low budget, shooting a typical stereotype of an "indie" star walking about in a suit connoting that of mystery, smart, educated again fitting in with the idea of French new wave cinema.
This video will represent the target audience and the members of a genre like this as rebellious as there is scenes of smoking. Connoting people in this genre as independent, creative with their own identity. This genre of music is all to do with battling the average mainstream
pop act by being individual with lyrics, looks, videos and a completely different way of life. This video does contain a large level of redundancy as the viewrs can recgonise and understand everything in the video making this video not original as there has been plenty of videos shot on the streets of Paris.
The video is mainly shot outside without using artificial light or a studio connecting and relating with the audience as many of the audience will never have had the chance to use a studio. The outside filming makes this more realistic and helps create a sense of interest of where the video is shot.

The camera work in this video is crucial to help develop a genre theme and to create a successful video within this genre’s brackets. Throughout the video there is establishing shots showing the artists walking or standing in Paris giving the effect of romance and mystery in a number of shots a fish eye lense is used which again creates a shot of distance but can also link in with the mysterious and ”indie” look. There is a number of close and mid shots of the artist can show the emotion of the artist but also it helps the video flow with the lip-syncing. The close up shots also show items significant to the video this helps the viewers understand where and what is going on in the video. The video camera used gives the illusion that it may have been a cine camera threw the flickering and poor quality also the way the video is shot it looks like it may have been hand held in parts which again links in with the low production costs indie music video look. In Parts of the video a tripod has been used as we can see such camera techniques as pan, tilt and dolly these camera techniques can help produce a professional looking video for this particular genre. There is a section in the video where zoom and reverse zoom in a speeded up number of shots, which makes the video, look modern and contemporary appealing to its target audience. The editing of the video is a mixture of continuity editing and montage editing as there are scenes in the video which are flowing and continuous but there is also a lot of jumping from location to another location and the fast paced editing of the music shop confirms there is montage editing this will attract people to the video as it will keep viewers interested and not to predictable. The video consists of plenty of short takes of the artist in different locations but the video does not have an expansion of time as we can see all the video is in the day. This editing skills also links in with the indie genre as there are no post production visual effects keeping costs low which will appeal to the audience and a good way to make such a successful indie music video.

Michael Shore concludes that a music video is that of a recycled styles which shows a male fantasy of power, girls, wealth and danger. I would argue to a point that this video has not got that strong masculine feel too it but does recycle the fantasies of that the artist. This becomes apparent through the arcadia scenes of Peter Doherty Running threw the romantic streets of Paris, standing outside an old shaggy music store, vintage fair ground and historic streets giving the effect of mystery tied in with love.
